If you’re looking for some new clothes in time for summer, you could do worse than this pair of “Immortal Smugglers” starring none other than Andrew “Joey” Johns.
Featured in the Budgy Smugglers online store, the swimmers sport an iconic Mad Monday image – which the former Newcastle Knights apparently cannot remember – taken after the 1997 grand final victory over Manly.
The image shows Joey, beer in hand, skateboarding on a street in Newcastle in the Hunter region of NSW. It is also available on a bob and a feminine swimsuit.
Now that Joey is back at Newcastle as a Knights coach, it seems more appropriate to consider having a pair of these togs as a souvenir.
Joey promoted the togs on his Instagram, saying, “I can’t help but laugh at this effort by @budgysmuggler to capture this iconic Mad Monday moment (wish I could remember it) afterwards. the victory of the GF 97 “.
“Available in Men, Women and Bob. The first batch is sold out but they have already been restocked. All made in Australia.”
We went to budgetysmuggler.com.au and checked out the Immortal Smugglers, but the images were strangely blurry.
The first thing that came to my mind was if the company had encountered some sort of copyright issue with the image, which was taken from a famous photo.
So we asked the company and received this response from “smuggling general manager” Brenden Hartmann: “We just had to take a few steps with Maccas to showcase their logo, which is now sorted.”
“Thanks for the reminder, we can blur the picture. “
